Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), we recommend that a child’s first dental visit be scheduled by his/her 1st birthday.
For children ages 1 to 3, we will likely perform a “lap to lap” exam. It is normal at this age to not be able to sit in the dental chair yet. We understand. The goal is to start exams earlier so they will have to sit in the dental chair less when they are older.
For all children, parents should not make a big deal out of the visit and refrain from using any words that could cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle”, “hurt” or “drill.” As a pediatric dental office, we make it a practice of using alternative words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to children.
